Jewellery Talk with Nord by Thomsen

6 years ago Mette Nordby Thomsen founded her company almost by coincidence. Today she has her own boutique featuring both her own brand Nord By Thomsen as well as other jewellery labels. We met with the 40-year-old Goldsmith to hear her story.

Why did you choose to become a jewellery designer?
It was actually something I had been thinking about for some years, but never really acted upon. I was working with a couple of photographers when I met Torben Hardenberg who was working on his book about his jewellery. He brought all his little beautiful pieces of art, and right there, I was just sold. It made my dream of becoming a Goldsmith reappear. And so I did.

How and why did you start your label?
Nord By Thomsen actually came to life almost by a coincidence in 2011, but somehow it has always been in my plans to start my own company. During my maternity leave I was laid off and when that happened I thought to myself that there had to be a greater meaning with this situation. Therefore I started my own company and has been very happy I did so ever since.

What moments would you highlight in your entrepreneurial journey so far? And what has been the greatest challenge?
It was a really big thing for me to open my own shop in Møntergade 14, and probably also the biggest challenge I have had so far – but it is definitely a decision I am happy I made.

What do you dream about?
On a professional level, I dream that my company will exist in many years to come, and perhaps one day, my children can take over the business.

Describe a perfect day for you?
A perfect day for me is when I can spend time with my family.

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
You can do what you set your mind to, but be sure to ask yourself and feel within yourself, what that really is.

Do you have a piece of jewellery that is extra special to you?
My wedding ring.

Do you have a motto you live by?
Don´t worry.

What do you see as the next hottest jewellery trends?
I see more and more customers who want to reuse their old jewellery and redesign them instead of throwing them away. I think it is a tendency that will grow as we are probably more aware of our resources now.

What would you do if you won 100 million kr.?

I would give a lot away to friends and family. I would also like to start a foundation, where people who needed financial support, could apply. The rest I would probably use travelling the world.
